When I was at the slumberland 20th anniversary show, down in L.A., I saw alot of good bands. The only problem was that after 5 twee pop/indie pop bands, it kind of all blends all together (blasphemy you say! Well, I say, you haven't seen indie pop live, because they really do start sound alike when the volume's at 11 and the fuzz is at 12).
Then, Neverever came on the stage.
First, it must me noted that the singer, Jihae, was wearing high heels, and spandex straight out of 1975. I had a feeling then either this was going to be really good or really bad. Thankfully it was the first. What kind of music was coming up next, I wondered?
Well, a weird mix of punk, new-wave, doo-wop, rockabilly, and indie-pop. With lots of oohs. LOTS.
The band started, and it was soon obvious that it was her show- she was all over the place, wooing and seducing. When they got to their song "teardrop tatoo", she really let it go- I don't think i've ever seen someone sing the "ooh's and ahh's" so convincingly, sexily, and with as much passion as her. It was almost like a striptease for a shy indie kid.
When they finished, I looked at my brother, (who probably expected me to know who they were, but believe it or not, I don't know EVERY indie band that's ever existed...) and went "woah". His response: At first, woah, but then he told me they were the standout. My brother's hard to please. So, short story is they're good.
Anyways, they just changed their name from The Champagne Socialists to Neverever, so hopefully they'll keep this one. (I like both names personally, but I think neverever fits better). Someone recommended them to me (when they were still the champagne socialists) but for whatever reason I never followed up. Moral?
LISTEN TO EVERYTHING EVER
I'll let you know when I've done that. In the meantime, check out their myspace and pick up a copy of their 7" as the champagne socialists here (because when they become famous it's gonna be nice to have).
